Why we charge a fee

Global PeaceWorks' programs are driven entirely by volunteer contributions.  We charge a fee to make our programs possible.  However, we only charge a fee to about half of our volunteers.  The others who do not pay fees are from economically distressed countries.  We depend on the fees paid by those in America, Japan, Europe and elsewhere to make the participation of South Asian participants possible (many people in South Asia earn less than $100 USD per month).

We incur costs as we develop each including costs for identifying and selecting host organizations.   Preparing, training, transporting, housing, feeding, and supervising volunteers is not cheap. Additional services such as local travel, site visits and outings add to the expenses of a program. Naturally, recruiting volunteers, producing literature, sending mailings, developing a website, and interviewing potential volunteers are all additional costs significant.

If you compare programs, you will find that Global PeaceWorks fees are less than the fee charged by comparable programs of other international volunteer programs.

Program fees and the cost of international airfare are usually U.S. tax-deductible.

In addition, volunteers are provided a fundraising kit to help raise funds for their participation (kit is provided after the initial deposit is made)
