Global PeaceWorks Fundraising Guidelines
Many
volunteers of Global PeaceWorks raise funds for their travel and
participation from their local community. Our
experience is that a fundraising letter (accompanied by a Global
PeaceWorks brochure) and followed
by a phone call is
quite effective. The more passion you have for this project,
the more people are willing to donate and support you and the work
we do.
Here are some general guidelines of how this can
be done.
While
you can certainly request money from your family and friends before
you apply and make a deposit, it is best to do
it AFTER you have applied and made your deposit. The reason is that AFTER you make your deposit,
- We
will send you brochures and our sample fundraising letter.
- We will also coach you by phone as need to help support
your efforts to raise money.
- If
you have trouble raising the money and you can request a refund
of your deposit (90 days or more) before the event.
- Finally,
we have MANY people who inquire about our program and want financial
support, but we can only help you raise your own support for
the event. The application and deposit demonstrates your
seriousness and commitment to this work. Once someone applies
and makes a deposit, we take that very seriously and work to
provide the
support we
can.
In
past projects, we have experienced three main sources of donors.
1 - Family. While we may feel
uncomfortable asking for money from rich Uncle Thurgood for that
new widescreen
TV, our experience is that Uncle Thurgood (or whomever!) is GLAD
to have the OPPORTUNITY to give to a relative who is doing something
meaningful to help the world. (many times, Uncle Thurgood himself
has not had the chance to travel and offer service in a developing
nation, so he may see you as doing it on his behalf!)
2 - Business
Acquaintances. Business owners
want to maintain good relationships with you and with the community. We
recommend providing a nice, personal, thank you letter along with
a photo to the businesses you receive donations from. They
can hang it on their wall as a sign of their good will.
3 - Your Church,
Synagogue, Mosque, Gurudwara, Temple or other community group. In each of our programs, some participants
have received support from their own faith group. Again, you
should be sure to offer a presentation (and perhaps a slide show!)
of your experience. EVERYONE wants to feel connected to the
rest of the world. Global PeaceWorks is one way ANY group can
do that.

guide to fundraising that may help
you get prepared.
