Janta Colony, February 2004
a letter from Khorrum

Dear friends,

Its been a while since we all parted and I am sure all of you have now settled down with you daily busy routines.

Last week I went to Janta Colony again and was amazed to see the place, many changes have taken place in those small alleys.

First of all the building is now complete with 2 stories and ready to start with many activities which Mr. Anthony David is working on and seeking further help from us too. There will be a vocational training program for the women that will include sewing/tailoring and beautician course. The ground floor will be used as day care center for the children of the locality.

I have suggested them to start a counseling center for young adults.  A place for listening to their problems in daily life; be it education, work or relationships.  We all know that one needs guidance and information to grow and prosper.  Many of these underprivileged young people are lost to world of crime and drugs as there are not many options available to them. And information about the few options that do exist doesn't filter down to that level.   So that's what I have suggested that we start this program to not just guide them but help them in achieving a proper life. I invite you all for your suggestions as to how we could best do that.

I must share some wonderful news too! Our work there as an international team inspired the local politicians in the area.  You know we had an article on the first page of the Dainik Jagran,  biggest Hindi language newspaper - so they heard about us, and they heard more through the local community.  The result of which is that and now those alleys on which, one could hardly walk as the roads were broken and full of dirt and filth are now clean and newly paved. They also offered all kinds of support to Chetanalya for the community center.

Mr. Anthony requested me to come for the formal opening of the center and asked me to forward the invitation to everyone in the group who so ever can make it. He also requested me for our photographs with names of each one of us as they want put this up in the hall for everyone to see.

Next time I will visit there with a camera and will share the photos with all of you.

Lastly, remember how we all had to look around and embarassedly ask for for the toilets in the area, we will not have to worry about that if we are in the neighbourhood again, the building now has a very nice and clean toilet and we are welcome to use it whenever required. :)

Wish to see you all again this December and best of luck.

Warm regards

Khorrum Omer
